Priyanthi Rajapaksa from the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association, has been selected by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) as a member of its delegation to the Earth Summit 2012 (Rio+20).
The UN Conference on Sustainable Development will be the last of three conferences to be held consecutively in Brazil’s capital Rio de Janeiro from June 20 – 22. It will be preceded by the Third Session of the Preparatory Committee Meeting from June 13 -15 and the ‘four thematic days’ proposed by the Government of Brazil from June 16 – 19.
Priyanthi who has been a Guide since 1969, is the Projects Executive of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association. She is a well known figure in guiding circles having taken the lead role as Chairman of Projects from 1990-1996. She is also a member of the Asia Pacific Resource Pool for Training.
The twenty-four strong WAGGGS delegation to Rio+20 including Priyanthi will champion the work already being done by the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts worldwide for sustainable development.
WAGGGS’ Global Action Theme (GAT) is girls worldwide say, “Together we can change our world.” It affirms WAGGGS’ commitment to the most compelling global agenda of our times: the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The WAGGGS initiative encourages girls, young women and members of all ages to make a personal commitment to change the world around them.
“I found the theme interesting and thought provoking,” says Priyanthi. “At present the Girl Guides Association is keenly working on the WAGGGS theme on Environmental issues.” She looks forward to gaining more insight from the Earth Summit 2012 to incorporate sustainable development concepts to projects implemented by the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association.
