Long time since the issue with Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen trespass each others waters particularly in the Eastern and Northern parts of the country have come to light but still there has not been a concrete solution found.
Diplomatic talks are said to be going but the “mystery” of fishermen getting killed and who is behind it is still unsolved.
Indian coastal guards arrest Sri Lankan fishermen who said to have crossed the Indian waters and vice versa; Sri Lankan Navy arrests Indian fishermen found poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters. There were issues where the SL Navy chased away fishermen from Tamil Nadu who crossed Sri Lankan waters. Initially SL Navy was pointed at for the killings of Indian fishermen which SL Navy strongly denied.
It has become a regular practice for Indian fishermen to come to Sri Lankan waters and fish, which is a known factor. There is a story behind. The actual incident is Sri Lankan fish harvest is being literary looted by the Indian fishermen.
Fishing is the main occupation of the people live in Northern and Eastern parts ofSri Lanka. But they lost at least 70 percent of it due to this trespassing of the Indian fishermen. However, south Indian politicians have made sure to interpret this as “innocent Indian fishermen unknowingly crossing over the Sri Lankan waters”.
This is not a new issue but has been happening since the war was going on inSri Lanka. Sri Lankan Navy has spotted hundreds of Indian Trawlers fishing in theSri Lankaterritorial waters. Now this has become a mafia and these fishermen are daring enough to attack and chase away Sri Lankan fishermen.
Indian fishermen have grown so powerful become of the fish mafia leaders in south India. Entire fishing operating in India is ruled by a few boat owners. Many fishermen do work under these boat owners and its wide spread as a network which even has weapons circulating.
The Northern coastal area of Sri Lanka is famous for its big prawns which Indian fishermen have eyed at. Unfortunately the Indian fishermen grab this harvest and earn lump sums by exporting these big prawns to Japan and European countries. Sri Lanka fish harvest has become a famous earning for Indian fishermen.
These Indian boat owners are sponsored by the south Indian politicians. Nothing to surprise; but not to be mistaken as these politicians has sympathy for Tamil people inSri Lanka.
In other words, if Vaiko, Jayalalitha, Seeman or Nedumaran truly concern about the welfare of Sri Lankan Tamils, first and foremost thing to do is avoid Indian fishermen crossing Sri Lankan waters. Fishing is the main way of earning of the Sri Lankan Tamils living in Northern andEastern Sri Lanka. And they should be allowed to enjoy and earn out of the resources belong to their country.
South Indian people along with their corrupt politicians must respect that realty.
Due to this mafia, Sri Lanka is loosing a huge income and there is no attention even from the Indian Central government has paid for this issue. Still the discussions are going on and hardly any mechanism has been implemented to solve this issue.
